All that we offer at Hoʻi ka Hā is rooted in ALOHA, a living expression born of the Kanaka Maoli, the Indigenous people of Hawaiʻi. We acknowledge that Hawaiʻi is ʻāina ʻōiwi (ancestral land) and that the Hawaiian people continue to carry, protect, and evolve their wisdom despite histories of displacement. We commit to honoring their language, culture, and sovereignty, and to walking our practice with humility, gratitude, and kuleana.
What if you could meet life with less struggle and reactivity, and more clarity, steadiness, and ALOHA?
Live online • No meditation experience required • Open to people of all beliefs and backgrounds
Because of the uncertainty of the US economy, there is currently no tuition required for this course.
Life doesn’t have to become easier for you to meet it differently.
Aloha! My name is Kit Kanohoaloha Wynkoop and I’m the Lead Teacher and Curator of The Path to Living ALOHA. Thank you for stopping by to check out the course!
Life brings uncertainty, difficult relationships, old habits, disappointment, change, loss, stress, and plenty we simply cannot control.
Most of us have learned to deal with these experiences by thinking harder, distracting ourselves, pushing uncomfortable feelings away, or reacting from familiar patterns.
There is another possibility. We can learn to become aware of what is happening within us before automatically reacting to it. We can discover that thoughts and emotions do not have to control what happens next. And we can learn to meet ourselves, other people, and life itself with greater clarity, openness, compassion, and ease.
At Hoʻi ka Hā, we call this living ALOHA.
Aloha nō! My name is Kilohana Silve and I’m the Native Hawaiian Cultural Advisor for the course called The Path to Living ALOHA. This course is a unique approach to meditation that incorporates learning to live the premise of “Aloha” from Hawaiian culture. Although there are many excellent methods or initiation courses to guide one through the basics of meditation, I find Kit Kanohoaloha Wynkoop’s gentle and patient manner of teaching to be very encouraging and inclusive of all student levels.
His mélange of Tibetan and Hawaiian cultural values adds a rich and universal experience to the practice that transcends time and place. In the Hawaiian tradition our gratitude and willingness to flow with all that we encounter in life is an expression of Aloha. Joining other likeminded seekers in the calm and heartfelt atmosphere of The Path to Living ALOHA helps one to maintain and live in accordance with the growing sense of awareness that is developed through meditation practice. This is living Aloha.
What Does It Mean to Live ALOHA?
ALOHA is much more than a greeting.
According to Aunty Pilahi Pakī, Aunty Morrnah Nālamakū Simeona, and Aunty Nānā Veary, three of Hawaiʻi’s most beloved and respected wisdom keepers of the 20th century, within the Hawaiian culture, ALOHA points toward a way of relating to ourselves, one another, the natural world, and life itself through qualities such as presence, kindness, harmony, humility, patience, and mutual regard.
The Path to Living ALOHA combines meditation, self-awareness, inquiry, and practical wisdom to help participants discover these qualities through their own experience.
The purpose isn’t to give you another philosophy to believe. It is to help you investigate your own experience and discover what actually changes the way you live.
What Might Begin to Change?
With practice, you may find yourself better able to:
- Bring more calm and presence into your relationships and parenting.
- Notice stress and reactivity before they take over
- Work skillfully with difficult thoughts and emotions
- Recognize habitual patterns that no longer serve you
- Respond rather than automatically react
- Strengthen attention, mindfulness, and self-awareness
- Communicate with greater clarity and understanding
- Develop compassion without losing healthy boundaries
- Become less governed by self-criticism
- Remain more present during uncertainty and change
- Experience greater ease in your relationships
- Meet everyday life with more curiosity and less resistance
- Develop a steadier sense of inner freedom
The goal isn’t to become calm all the time. The goal is to develop a different relationship with whatever life brings.
Living Consciously
The course is an experiential journey that that points the way toward living consciously with awareness. A powerful way to get there is called mindfulness.
According to Thao N. Le & Pono Shim, the ancient form of Buddhist meditation is arguably the most powerful expression of mindfulness and has been for over 2,500 years. Mindfulness has been found to be a valuable tool for promoting the well-being and overall health of anyone who finds themselves to be subjected to stress or under mental duress. And who isn’t in today’s world?
Meditation is sometimes presented as a way to escape from stress for a few quiet minutes.
We use it differently.
Meditation becomes a laboratory in which you learn to notice how your mind works: how thoughts arise, how emotions gather momentum, how habitual reactions form, and how awareness can create space before you act.
Then the real practice begins: It happens in conversations. In traffic. At work. While parenting. During conflict. When plans collapse. When someone pushes exactly the button you wish you didn’t have.
The purpose of meditation in this course is not to become good at sitting still or getting rid of thoughts, it is to become more awake to your life while you are living it.
Who Is This Course For?
The Path may be a good fit if you:
- Feel caught in recurring patterns of stress or emotional reactivity
- Spend more time in your thoughts than you would like
- Want to develop a calming meditation practice that actually carries into everyday life
- Are interested in understanding yourself more deeply
- Want greater peace without withdrawing from the realities of the world
- Want to relate to other people with greater patience, compassion, and clarity
- Have explored mindfulness or personal growth but want to go deeper
- Are willing to question some of your assumptions about yourself and life
- Value direct experience more than being told what to believe
- Are ready to give meaningful change some time
You do not need previous meditation experience.
You do not need to consider yourself a seeker.
And you do not need to adopt a new belief system.
You only need curiosity and a willingness to investigate your own personal experience.
What Happens in a Class?
The Path is taught live online in small cohorts so that learning can happen through both personal practice and shared experience. A typical 90-minute gathering includes:
Meditation
Develop attention, awareness, and familiarity with your own mind.
Practical Teaching
Explore one aspect of meditation, self-awareness, human experience, relationship, or living ALOHA.
Reflection & Inquiry
Rather than simply accepting an idea, investigate whether it holds true in your own experience.
Conversation
Participants may share lived experience, questions, confusion, insights, or resistance in a respectful group environment.
Integration
Learn simple ways to bring that week’s exploration into ordinary life.
Optional readings and videos are provided between gatherings for those who wish to explore further.
Why Is The Path Longer Than a Typical Meditation Course?
Because information is quick. Change usually isn’t.
You can learn the mechanics of meditation in an afternoon. Learning to recognize deeply established habits while they are actually happening, and discovering a different way of responding, takes practice.
The Path therefore unfolds gradually.
You are not expected to master a new concept every week or race toward an outcome. Instead, the course provides something short programs rarely can: time to practice, notice, question, integrate, forget, remember, stumble, discover, and practice again.
The full Path consists of 65 weekly classes. But you do not have to commit to all 65 when you begin.
Begin With the Foundation
Levels 1 & 2 form the foundational immersion.
This is your first commitment.
During the foundation, you establish meditation and self-awareness practices and begin exploring the habitual patterns that shape how you experience everyday life.
You will work with:
- Attention and mindfulness
- Awareness of thoughts and emotions
- Stress and reactivity
- Habitual patterns
- Fear and self-criticism
- Emotional regulation
- Acceptance
- Curiosity
- Presence
- Your relationship with yourself and others
At the end of the foundation, you decide whether continuing deeper into The Path feels right for you.
One step at a time.
The Full Path
The course gradually moves through three broad areas of exploration.
1. AWARENESS – (Levels 1 & 2) Learning to see clearly
Develop meditation, attention, emotional awareness, and the ability to recognize habitual patterns without immediately being controlled by them.
The emphasis is on your relationship with your own experience.
2. RELATIONSHIP – (Levels 3 & 4) Bringing awareness into the world
Explore compassion, communication, interdependence, confidence, curiosity, and your relationship with other people and the world around you.
The emphasis shifts from me toward we.
3. FREEDOM – (Levels 5 & 6) Learning to stop fighting life
Explore some of the deeper questions raised by meditation and self-inquiry: identity, ego, awareness, trust, acceptance, reality, and what becomes possible when we stop insisting that life conform to our expectations.
The emphasis is increasingly on living ALOHA naturally rather than trying to manufacture it.
Where Do the Teachings Come From?
The Path draws from several bodies of contemplative and philosophical wisdom, particularly:
- Mindfulness and Buddhist contemplative practice
- Eastern psychology
- Shambhala teachings
- Hawaiian understandings of ALOHA per the teachings of Aunty Pilahi Pakī, Aunty Morrnah Nālamakū Simeona, and Aunty Nānā Veary
- Hoʻoponopono per the teaching of Aunty Morrnah Nālamakū Simeona
- Other Indigenous wisdom traditions
- Advaita Vedanta and nondual inquiry
- Contemporary understandings of awareness, and human behavior
Some of these traditions are spiritual in their original settings. The Path does not ask participants to adopt their beliefs. Instead, we explore practices and insights common across a broad spectrum of belief systems that can be investigated secularly through direct human experience.
You are encouraged to question everything that is presented.
Keep what proves useful.
Examine what challenges you.
Set aside what does not hold true in your experience.
This course does not seek to make you a Buddhist, non-dualist, Taoist, or any other -ist. It exists to make you a better whatever you already are and to inform you that there is a secular path available to anyone who wishes to become a beacon of ALOHA in the world.
Why ALOHA?
All that we offer at Hoʻi ka Hā is rooted in ALOHA, a living expression born of the Kanaka Maoli, the Indigenous people of Hawaiʻi.
We recognize that ALOHA is not ours to redefine as a wellness slogan.
Our understanding of living ALOHA and our kuleana to share it is bestowed by Hawaiian wisdom keepers and cultural guidance, including the work of Aunty Pilahi Pakī, Aunty Morrnah Nālamakū Simeona, and Aunty Nānā Veary, as well as the guidance of the course’s Native Hawaiian Cultural Advisor, Kilohana Silve and others.
We acknowledge Hawaiʻi as ʻāina ʻōiwi, ancestral land, and recognize the Hawaiian people who continue to carry, protect, practice, and evolve their culture and wisdom.
Our responsibility is to approach this wisdom with humility, gratitude, respect, and kuleana.

Meet The Teacher
Kit Kanohoaloha Wynkoop (Kanoho) is the founder of Hoʻi ka Hā and the lead teacher and curator of The Path to Living ALOHA. His approach grew from being raised in Hawaiʻi and hānai by Native Hawaiian kūpuna as well as from decades of meditation, contemplative practice, teaching, and exploration of the ways human beings across cultures have approached some remarkably similar questions:
Why do we struggle with our own minds?
What creates lasting inner change?
What happens when we stop automatically believing every thought?
How do awareness and compassion change our relationships?
And what does genuine freedom look like in ordinary life?
Rather than asking participants to adopt his conclusions, Kanoho presents practices, perspectives, and questions for participants to investigate for themselves.
His role is not to tell you what to believe. His role is to encourage you look at yourself.
The course is supported by Native Hawaiian Cultural Advisor Kilohana Silve, whose guidance helps ensure that its presentation of ALOHA remains respectful of its Hawaiian cultural grounding.
